Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then found numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking official said the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
