EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
