Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
