Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
